Taking advantage of the Supreme Court’s decision on presidential immunity, the Biden campaign is launching a new television ad in battleground states that criticizes both the nation’s top court and former President Donald Trump sharply.
America was founded on the tenet that no one is above the law, not even the president, about 250 years ago, in defiance of a king. Up until now,” the narrator remarks as she shows a flurry of Trump videos.
The narrator of the 30-second TV ad then states, “The same Trump Supreme Court that overturned Roe v. Wade ruled that the president can ignore the law even to commit a crime because Donald Trump asked them to.” The image of the six conservative Supreme Court justices follows.
The narrator goes on, “He’s already led an insurrection and threatened to be a dictator on day one.” “Donald Trump is not fit to serve in this capacity again.”
The “250 Years” advertisement is scheduled to air in battleground states as part of a seven-figure purchase, a campaign official said, declining to disclose the precise price. According to the official, it will air on networks including ESPN, TNT, Bravo, FX, Freeform, and Comedy Central that “over-index” for younger and diverse audiences. The advertisement will also run during athletic events and other occasions with “high viewership, such as national news programs.”
The move coincides with President Joe Biden’s attempt to redirect his campaign toward upholding and safeguarding democracy, one of his main points of contention for reelection. Biden is attempting to deal with the fallout from his lackluster debate performance, which has caused many in the Democratic party to wonder if he should continue leading the party.
A rising number of Democratic officials say they want Biden to resign for the sake of the party and the nation, and at least one member of Congress, Rep. Lloyd Doggett of Texas, has openly called on him to do so. Concerned by his debate performance, the president is scheduled to meet with Democratic governors and talk with congressional leaders on Wednesday.
Following the discussion, the president made his first statements at the White House, denouncing the Supreme Court’s decision to grant immunity and calling on the people of the United States to “dissent” in November.
“There are essentially no boundaries to the president’s authority,” the president declared. “It’s a dangerous precedent and a fundamentally new principle because the office’s power will no longer be limited by the law, not even by the US Supreme Court.”
In recent months, Biden has been more critical of the Supreme Court and has made an effort to warn that a Trump administration would result in the appointment of more conservative justices to the nation’s top court.
Regarding the new advertisement, Biden campaign communications director Michael Tyler said, “The thing about America is that we were founded in defiance of a king, but this week, Trump’s Supreme Court gave him carte blanche to do anything he wants if he ever walks back into the Oval Office.” This move puts into question everything he has said thus far during the campaign trail, including “terminating” the Constitution, putting his political rivals in jail, and yes, taking over as dictator if given the opportunity. It really is that real.
